Pretty friends with pretty book covers

Did you know friend of the blog, Katie Alender has a new book coming out in 2009?

Here's what it's about:

To the world, fifteen-year-old Alexis Warren is just a pink-haired troublemaker. She doesn’t have any real friends, and her parents are way too wrapped up in their own problems to bother with hers. Pretty much the only things Alexis can count on are the photographs she creates in her darkroom and her little sister Kasey.

One night, to help take Kasey’s mind off a vicious family argument, Alexis makes up a story -- the first thing that comes to mind, really -- just a harmless yarn about a little girl with no friends. But Kasey seems to take the whole thing a little too seriously. Before long, she’s actually bringing parts of the story to life -- and people are getting hurt.

Alexis knows she has to find a way to stop her sister before something terrible happens. But with no friends and no help from her parents, she’s basically on her own -- until help turns up in the unlikeliest form -- Alexis’ archnemesis Megan Wiley, who happens to be the captain of the cheerleading squad.

Isn't this a spectacular cover? Did you know Katie's birthday is today? Happy Birthday, Katie!

Both Katie and FOTB Maria Zaninni were blessed with well-designed covers. I hope Amra, who has a book coming out later this year, will be just as happy with her cover.

Oh, go ON!

;-)

Thanks, Josephine! What a nice birthday surprise.

And Maria's cover looks spicy indeed. I want that model's abs (the lady model, not the man).

The cover is nice, but the blurb is great. Sounds like a compelling story. Is it YA?

Congrats Katie, and good luck with the novel.

Katie: With the blog shutting down soon, I've gotta help friends do some promoting before I sign off for a while. And I figured I needed to pretty things up around here after posting that OOTG story drawing.

Luc: I belive it is, but you'll have to check Katie's website to be certain.

Yeah, I couldn't find it on her blog/webiste, but then I saw it on her blogger profile. It is indeed YA.

Ooh, good to know there's an information gap there, LOL!

Thanks, Luc!

Katie: I only clicked around a bit over there (love the cool icons) but genre was not %100 clear - figured it was me, not your website, but Luc may well have a point.

I tweaked the book's page, but I'm planning a mini-overhaul, and that will definitely be addressed!

I can't leave my hairstyle or my website alone for more than a few months at a time. ;-)

That is a great cover. The story sounds quite original too. I will have to check this out.

Beautiful cover, and fascinating premise. Congratulations to the author. And a question: most books I buy seem to use stock photography on the covers (lots of times they'll be credited to Getty Images or similar) but yours looks like a bespoke shoot - was it? If so, i's great that the publisher is going that extra mile for you.

Charles and conduit, thank you both! That's so nice to hear.

conduit, I think it actually is a stock image. I can't believe the designer was able to find something that fit so well, though. I also think it's funny that there's a girl out there somewhere who's going to suddenly see herself on a book cover.

Conduit: The book cover for the hard edition of CHRISTINE FALLS is just one example of a stock photo that gets used over and over on different books. I've seen it on at least two other books.

Katie: If that's a stock image it doesn't have the look or feel of one. Nice details. Love the painted toes.

Charles: I hear more horror stories about book covers than anything else - seems to be the #1
author complaint. Linnea Sinclair shocked me when she told me the illustrator for one of her books was fired because he talked to her - because she felt compelled to give him some input, which he did not seem to mind - the publisher fired him. The message, of course, was meant to keep the writer in their place and make them accept whatever cover they get.

Katie: Wow, then I'm amazed at how good an eye your designer has. What a great choice of photo, and what a great design.

That is such a gorgeous cover. I hope mine is half as beautiful.
